bUneke.org is a non profit organization that seeks to bring positive change to the world. Kind of a pie in the sky ideal, right? But that’s why I love working with them. This tribe aligns with my sensibilities. Life in 2020 has been difficult for many. Among disasters, unemployment, displacement, death and the fight for racial equality, this organization and the people involved have proven where their heart is. This positivity has personally helped sustain me over the last few months. They continue to show the importance of helping others, giving to the community and supporting causes that do the same around the world.
HOW I GOT INVOLVED
I first met Jennifer, Franklin and Anna while working on a short film two years ago. They led the Art Department and really made an impression with their creativity. Above and beyond that, they all carried a sweet spirit of collaboration and genuine love for what they were doing. We worked on several projects after and Jennifer let me know that she was transferring her previous business effort to an online magazine in partnership with the non profit organization Peacecore, Inc. This is where I met Mary, Lynn, Tyrell and Yvonne and began volunteering. We have done wonderful work together since.
GREEN GABLES PROJECT
Our last project led by Jennifer, involved the saving of a Queen Anne style home built in 1896. Affectionately called Green Gables, it was scheduled to be sold and demolished, making way for a commercial construct with a beach view in Melbourne, Florida. bUneke first learned about the house near the end of 2019 and immediately took action to help. The challenge was that it needed $250,000 to qualify for a matching grant by May or the property would be sold to the city. With the positivity that the bUneke teams brings and the relentlessness of Jennifer and the Green Gables board leaders, we were able to help raise the necessary funds in time to qualify for the matching grant. They are now in the process of restoration. You can donate to their cause and learn more about them here https://greengables.org.
bUNEKE MAGAZINE
You can read about this and other amazing stories in our free digital magazine, where bUneke highlights amazing people and help other non profits garner awareness, engagement and support for their causes. There are also printed versions that we provide to many of our partners. If you don’t have time to read, our magazine articles are provided as an audible broadcast voiced by some of our writers from around the world.
We have some really interesting projects that we are currently working on. One of which talks about the three freed slaves that founded the city of Melbourne, FL and the project to convert one of their original houses into a commemorative museum. We also have other projects coming up the rest of the year and are always looking for partners and volunteers.
